Leaking roof this monsoon?

With the monsoon around the corner, a leaking roof is something that many people are worried about. A leaking roof can be an annoying and also very expensive problem. If the roof has a leak, you may be at risk of significant water damage and potential danger if it is left unrepaired. Leaks may not be taken very seriously, and sometimes may only get a bucket as a “solution”. But leaks should not be underestimated because of the amount of damage that they can cause.

The most common causes for leaking roofs are due to;

Faulty Installation - Faulty installation of roof or poor workmanship and inferior quality of materials used in construction of roof. It is imperative that roofs are installed with the correct incline or slope, and using quality fasteners and roofing material. Incorrect installation of fasteners is one of the most common causes of leaking roofs

Material such as roof fasteners can become damaged or pulled up after a heavy storm or high winds occur. When the fasteners get pulled up, water is able to get into the underside of the roof itself and cause other problems. This includes mold (which is harmful to breathe) and severe water damage that can invade the building/ home and cause staining as well.

Due to harsh weather or damage from wind, flashing on different places of the roof may become easily damaged over time. Flashing is the most common reason that roofing will get leaks. Sometimes flashing is poorly installed which makes it highly susceptible to leaks. If it’s not the installation, it could be a bad quality product or perhaps affected by high winds or weather damage. Either way, if the flashing is damage roof is more than likely going to develop a leak over time.

Debris on the Roof - Heap of waste on roof or in the gutter prevents smooth flow of rain water which causes leakage as the water accumulates on the roof. In addition to leaks the standing water also results in a faster rate of corrosion on the roof

Weather effects - High wind pressure, storm and heavy rain affect roof structure and cause leakage.

Rust – One of the common causes of leakage faced by users is rust or corrosion of the metal roof during monsoon. Many metal roofs start corroding where they are pierced by the fastener, and create a leak point for the roof.

Some of the ways to prevent the leakage in roof are as follows:

Check out the Roof Leak Spots

It may be difficult to identify the problematic area in the absence of rain and therefore you may have to do the identification during wet weather. The most likely places where you will get a roof leak are the chimney, plumbing vent flashing, skylights etc. Apart from these leak spots, the roof may leak because it is worn out and needs a complete overhaul

Emergency Roof-Leak Repair Measures

Sometimes a leak emerges in the middle of rain. It can be taken care of by using plastic sheeting to cover the leak area on the roof. This should adequately cover the entire leak area.

Problems with Flashings

Pipes are also a major cause of leaking roofs and the troublesome spots will mostly involve the collars and flashings. These immediately call for new replacements and may require you to re-roof the building/house depending on the extent of the damage.
